Natural Gas in Transportation: Helping the Environment

Natural gas has been used in the transportation sector for over 75 years since it was considered as an alternative fuel for this sector. According to the National Gas Vehicle Coalition (NGVC) there are more than 130,000 natural gas vehicles on the roads of the US and approximately 3 million around the world and those numbers are expected to increase. In fact, just in the US, 3 % of natural gas is consumed by the transportation segment.

In the latest years, technology has been enhanced to allow the propagation of natural gas vehicles, mainly for fuel concentrated vehicle fleets, such as taxis and public buses. Nevertheless, several companies are manufacturing natural gas engine vehicles for sale (trucks, vans, automobiles, buses and even heavy duty equipment). Regardless of all the advances of natural gas vehicles, there are some problems that do not allow a bigger production; some of these problems are the lack of refueling infrastructure, limited range, the high initial cost, the trunk space and others.

Natural gas has another advantage which is very important and it is that it produces less contamination than other fuels such like gasoline or electricity. Just for you to know, a stat says that a normal car (diesel or gasoline) produces 60 % of carbon monoxide, 29 % of hydrocarbon and 31 % of nitrogen oxygen. All these pollutant agents contribute with the accelerated process of contamination of the atmosphere and also augment the intensity of dangerous soil contaminants.

This contamination also increases the presence of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Natural gas produces contamination too, but their levels are much less than in others like diesel or gasoline.
