Something About the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)
The SPE was founded in 1957; however, the date of birth of this society goes back to two centuries ago, when a group of engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania founded the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME). According to the SPE the AIME was created to “promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by all lawful means”.
Since its foundation, AIME worked very hard, in fact, in 1922, this organization had 900 petroleum members. In 1948, the Petroleum Division emerged as one of the most important units of AIME. Nine years later, this unit became the SPE of AIME, and in 1985 this one became independent from AIME.
Today, the SPE has more than 64,000 members in 110 countries around the world. In our days, oil exploration is a tremendously profitable industry. SPE is in charge of obtaining, communicating, and interchanging technical knowledge related to the oil drilling activity.
